Bizarre though her champion's actions may seem, the stories he soon tells her about himself are stranger still. As a talented artist, world traveller and accomplished flirt, Rose visits Chester for creative inspiration and her usual share of decadent fun. Yet she steps well beyond her wide experience when she spots the handsome captain of the beautifully painted Phantom at Tower Wharf and decides to seduce him. Her extensive education has taught her a good deal about the Anglo-Saxon hero he claims to be, but that man should have died a thousand years ago. Sensible Melanie wants to take her sister on a holiday that will help her forget her disloyal ex-husband. Like the captain of the Phantom, she hopes Edith will find her bearings again, but for Melanie that means keeping her sister away from the passionate boatman who seems to enchant women so easily. She fails and eventually finds herself succumbing in her own way to the man's undeniable charm, but not until Edith has disappeared, leaving only her journal behind. A unique blend of paranormal romance, historical fantasy, traditional ghost story and literary travelogue, Phantom of the Shroppie is a fun and thought-provoking contemporary fairy tale that embraces escapism while cutting to the chase about the pains and pleasures of life.
